A Budget for First Time Renters

Budget for First Time Renters

When considering renting your first apartment, it is important to consider all of the possible expenses. How much money do you have to spend every month? Will it be necessary to live with roommates in order to lower your monthly expenses?

Finding the perfect landlord and unit

Many landlords or real estate companies tend to charge a finder's fee or move-in fee as well as rent. In addition, most will ask for the first and last month's rent and a security deposit upon moving in. These superfluous fees can really put a first time apartment renter's budget in a squeeze, and should be avoided whenever possible. However, these additional fees are commonplace these days, and should always be accounted for in a first-time renter's budget.

Paying utilities

Aside from rent payments, a first time renter must account for the extra money needed to pay for utilities. Again, having roommates will lessen monthly costs towards utilities. The basic utilities are heat, water, and electricity. However, there are a variety of other services that a lot of renters use. Cable television, central air, trash service, and snow removal are just some of the services that you may need if you live in an apartment. If you are a first-time renter, you should do your research and know exactly what services you will need.

Transportation

Another important expense first-time apartment renters should take into account is transportation costs. Do you have a car? Will your apartment come with a parking space? If not, how much will a street parking permit cost? In addition, renters should consider the distance from their new apartment to their place of work. How much money will it take to get to work, and how will it factor into your monthly expenses? Is a train/bus/boat a more financially viable option?
